  • La Crosse was able to develop into one of Wisconsin’s largest cities because of a favorable conjunction of geographical facts. First is the breadth of fairly level ground between the river channel and the bluffs. It is wider here than in most places on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi and, although divided by the La Crosse River and extensive wetlands, the prairie had room for a city to grow.

Out with the old.. so sad no mention of the historical & memorable Mary E Sawyer Auditorium/ concert hall… bummer …
but life goes on & my brother & I saw RUSH in 1981 at the new concert hall.. Rush certainly didn’t disappoint.
We also skipped school to hear Teddy Kennedy speak at the new venue one afternoon.. The place was packed & you could have heard a pin drop. Regardless of political preference, he WAS an amazing speaker & had such a charisma. It was history & soon to become the end of an era… If you had the privilege to see one or more of the original Kennedy family speak, you’d be in awe. I was.

I went there to see Jim Reeves and Charlie Pride, also built and sold saw horses at the buidarama trade show, when I was a student at Western Technical in 1976.I missed Rush because I thought that he'd be back but that never happened, big mistake on my part.

Trempealeau was actually the main port on the Mississippi until around 1880 or so when a massive fire destroyed the business district of Trempealeau. Thats when the action shifted to Lacrosse. A lot of history in this area.

The fire and I believe it was easier for the railroads to come into lacrosse.

Great video. That new post office building though. It’s really too bad that this country couldn’t retain its architectural history. So much artistic beauty gone.

Gunderson knew how to deal appendicitis & could do appendectomies. He also knew how deadly an entropic pregnancy could be for women ! This was way back in the early part of the 20th century… It’s hard to understand how people and politicians of TODAY, seem to refuse to acknowledge that entropic pregnancies can STILL be deadly to women.
Here’s to Doctor Gunderson. I lived in La Crosse in the early 1980’s. What a beautiful city and the views off Granddads Bluff was extraordinary- and I’ll bet it STILL IS!!!

The names old style and special export are still being made. However they cheapened the recipe to the point you wouldn't recognize it😢. About 1992, when that Australian bought G Heilamans brewery 😢

@@Marktheshark-e7f through the 90’s they still made both of them, bartended there through then…they had a couple different brews since

@@urbugnmetoday3183 well they used the names old style and special export. But after 1992 it didn't have the quality. it's what happens when MBAs run a company.
